What is the perception of online degrees vis-?-vis conventional school degrees ?Are they both regarded similarly?

With so many distance learning institutions operating through out the world, it is difficult to gauge the credibility of each one, thus making it difficult to answer the question. Of course distance learning institutions are trustworthy, only if they are accredited to an organization which prospective employers would readily accept. So if you are considering an online degree and wish to enroll with any of the distance learning institutions, study the options carefully.

When a regional accrediting agency confers accreditation, it is viewed positively by most employers. So if you get a degree from any of these institutions, your degree will be accepted almost anywhere. However a lot of employers do not accept degrees conferred by institutions accredited to the Distance Education and Training Council. There are may institutions which are accredited by professional business organizations. So if you wish to get a job in similar profession, your degree will be viewed with trust by the particular organization.

Will employers take online degrees seriously?

The answer to this question entirely depends on the type of employer and the institution which has conferred the degree. There are many employers who firmly believe that all distance learning degrees are useless and anyone carrying that kind of degree is an useless employee too.

Yet there are several other employers who appreciate the difference between worthy and fraudulent institutions which offer distance learning. A degree from a recognized institution with the right accreditation can award a degree which is truly equivalent to one awarded by a conventional school.

Unfortunately there is no way of learning your prospective employer’s mind on the subject of distance learning, when applying for a job.

Increasing your chances of employer acceptance

So if you have acquired an onli8ne degree you should just go ahead and apply for the job you wish to mentioning the degree in your resume. If the degree is from a rightfully accredited institution the employer does not have any chance of knowing whether you actually sat for the course work or you studied online. Do not mention this aspect, to your employer, if you don’t have to.

There are many institutions however who advertise extensively mentioning that the entire course can be completed online. So if you have acquired a degree from such an institution, it is most likely that your employer will know beforehand that you have got the degree online.

Thus the crux of the matter lies in the fact that whether you can impress your employer with your resume and the interview that you are the right person for the job. You are after all more than your degree, whether online or otherwise. Be confident and in control of the situation when appearing for the interview and be honest and truthful when asked questions about your degree acquisition. There is no substitute for honesty and self-confidence when sitting for an interview.
